Show 973. part 1 of 2  The End of Sex: How Hookup Culture is Leaving a Generation Unhappy, Sexually Unfulfilled, and Confused About Intimacy by Donna Freitas

Michael Medved talks to the author.

Overview of book-

Hookup culture dominates the lives of college students today. Most students spend hours agonizing over their hopes for Friday night and, later, dissecting the evenings’ successes or failures, often wishing that the social contract of the hookup would allow them to ask for more out of sexual intimacy. The pressure to participate comes from all directions—from peers, the media, and even parents. But how do these expectations affect students themselves? And why aren’t parents and universities helping students make better-informed decisions about sex and relationships?

In The End of Sex, Donna Freitas draws on her own extensive research to reveal what young men and women really want when it comes to sex and romance. Surveying thousands of college students and conducting extensive one-on-one interviews at religious, secular public, and secular private schools, Freitas discovered that many students—men and women alike—are deeply unhappy with hookup culture. Meaningless hookups have led them to associate sexuality with ambivalence, boredom, isolation, and loneliness, yet they tend to accept hooking up as an unavoidable part of college life. Freitas argues that, until students realize that there are many avenues that lead to sex and long-term relationships, the vast majority will continue to miss out on the romance, intimacy, and satisfying sex they deserve.

An honest, sympathetic portrait of the challenges of young adulthood, The End of Sex will strike a chord with undergraduates, parents, and faculty members who feel that students deserve more than an endless cycle of boozy one night stands. Freitas offers a refreshing take on this charged topic—and a solution that depends not on premarital abstinence or unfettered sexuality, but rather a healthy path between the two.

Show 971 Part 2 of 3. THE (SHOCKING) TRUTH ABOUT TAXES: HOW DID A NATION FOUNDED ON TAX REBELLION COME TO EMBRACE 90% RATES?

Visit Michael Medveds history website at http://www.medvedhistorystore.com/

ACU includes part 1 and 2 of this history program. For part 3 subscribe to the Michael Medved podcast or purchase from the Michael Medved History Store.

The Founding Fathers risked their lives, fortunes and sacred honors to stop consumption taxes that amounted to barely two cents on the dollar, but less than 200 years later the nation they founded embraced top income tax rates above 90 percent. For most of our history, courts and legislators viewed federal income taxes as unconstitutional and an abomination but by 1913 a broad, new national consensus, including most Republicans, led to an amendment to the Constitution giving Washingtonnearly unlimited taxing power. At first, the top tax rate (7%!) applied only to incomes above $10,000,000 (in today's dollars) but within a hundred years federal, state and local taxes combined to take more than 40 cents out of every dollar, earned by every American in the private sector. The march to  higher taxes and bigger government has been interrupted on occasion by heroic tax reformers, including Calvin Coolidge, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush---and, importantly, John F. Kennedy. Unfortunately, it's a Republican president (no, not one named Bush) who could go down as the biggest, most disastrous tax-raiser in history.

This new history program will probe the mysteries of tax history: what were the Sons of Liberty really protesting in the Revolutionary Era and with the Boston Tea Party? How did Pennsylvania tax resisters nearly bring on civil war in the early years of the Republic? Why did America's disastrous experience in the War of 1812 first produce the disastrous notion of a federal income tax? Did Lincoln's backing of a war time income tax indicate his support of bigger government, more taxing power? Why did the Supreme Court and our greatest legal thinkers look askance at new tax schemes on behalf of what patriot pamphleteer Thomas Paine called government's "greedy hand"? And what are the prospects for radical reform schemes (Fair Tax, Flat Tax) most frequently discussed today?

THE (SHOCKING) TRUTH ABOUT TAXES will answers these and other questions, offering Americans the crucial background they need to understand one of the most important issues for the future of our economy - and our liberty.

Show 966 Part 2 of 3 THE WORST PRESIDENTS EVER: Big Lessons from the Most Colossal Failures in White House History

Available on 2 CDs or audio download from Michael Medveds history website at http://www.medvedhistorystore.com/

For part 3 of this series purchase entire series from Michael Medveds history store at  http://www.medvedhistorystore.com/

On the Presidents Day holiday, Americans traditionally concentrate on a few celebrated examples of White House greatness. But in a provocative, unconventional and all-new history program, Michael Medved argues that we can learn even more from alarming, astonishing and mostly untold stories of presidential failure.

After all, few leaders can ever hope to replicate the epic achievements of a Washington or a Lincoln. But every future president can—and must—seek to avoid the appalling ineptitude of John Tyler, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson and their feckless fellow travelers on the road to the White House Hall of Shame.

As a starting point, Medved uses more than a dozen polls of prominent historians, journalists and politicians, taken between 1948 and 2011, that ranked all our chief executives from best to worst. The same three names—Lincoln, Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt—emerged at the top of every list, but the bottom rungs of the ladder generated more controversy. Medved argues that the two presidents most often ranked as worst-of-the-worst—Warren G. Harding and U.S. Grant—don't deserve their disrespectful treatment, and he explains why both of them have begun a recent climb in historical esteem.

Meanwhile, a few other names almost always listed in the failure category—James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce, John Tyler, Andrew Johnson—richly earned their opprobrium and make the cut among Medved's "White House Worst." In fact, each of these men contributed to bringing on the greatest disaster in American history—the Civil War—or played a role in the tragic failures of the Reconstruction era.

 - Which of these men dealt with an invalid wife who locked herself upstairs in the White House and spent her time writing letters to a dead son—while also convening the very first executive mansion séance?

 - Which president won a gorgeous new wife (thirty years his junior) when he helped rescue her from a tragic explosion that killed her father—as well as the Secretary of State?

 - And which president tried to reform his alcoholic, self-destructive son by installing him as his chief White House aide, only to watch helplessly as the talented young man plunged ever deeper into his addiction and wrecked his father's administration in the process?

The misunderstood Herbert Hoover also shows up on the list of losers, but not for the reasons he became wildly unpopular among his contemporaries. No, he doesn't deserve blame for the Great Depression—the stock market crashed a mere six months after he took office. But he does deserve history's harshest judgment for responding to economic hardship in exactly the wrong way: by hiking taxes (painfully and needlessly), raising tariffs, and growing government. By the same token, what made Jimmy Carter's regime such a spectacular disaster wasn't the economic suffering the people endured under his leadership: he was still serving his single term as Georgia governor at the time of the Arab Oil Embargo and the beginning of crippling inflation. It was Carter's handling of crisis and reverses that made him so uniquely incompetent, and associated his leadership forever with the term "malaise."

Finally, Medved explains why other candidates often nominated for lists of the White House Worst don't really belong there—exonerating Harding, Grant and Nixon as well as George W. Bush and (so far, at least) Barack Obama. Meanwhile, two other presidents much-admired by historians—Woodrow Wilson and Lyndon Johnson—deserve special consideration. Their first term stature and undeniable achievements disqualify them from lists of all-time worsts, but megalomaniacal personalities, devastating damage to the Republic by their stubbornly-pursued policies, and heartbreaking rejection by the populace create a separate category of Epic Disasters.

Entertaining, surprising, informative and insightful, Medved's new history program includes pointed advice for future presidents (and our current incumbent) on how to avoid joining the terribly tarnished names included in the rich story-telling in this presentation of The Worst Presidents Ever.

Show  964 Book- Talking With Pagans   The Great God Debates from the Hugh Hewitt Show

Michael Medved talks to Hugh Hewitt author of Talking with Pagans: The Great God Debates.

Book Description- The debate over God's existence has been underway since the book of Job was written down. In recent years, the "new atheists" arrived on the media scene to add a measure of sarcasm and evolutionary biology to the mix of arguments against God. Defenders of God rose to the task and a series of debates between the camps ensued.

Some of the best, most vigorous, and most pointed of those occurred on Hugh Hewitt's nationally syndicated radio show and were heard by millions. Hugh himself debated Richard Dawkins on the radio, and Sam Harris on television. Hewitt's frequent and welcome guest Christopher Hitchens went at it with Dr. Mark D. Roberts and Dr. David Allen White in two epic showdowns totaling five hours which Hugh moderated. Other prominent atheists or agnostics mixed it up with other prominent Christian apologists.

Now all of those key debates are gathered in one place, along with an introduction from Hugh and a study guide useful to understanding the arguments deployed and the stakes involved.

The book sparkles with wit and soars to very great heights of theology while also hitting the very serious divides between believers and those who are not yet in that camp.

In War Against the Weak, award-winning investigative journalist Edwin Black connects the crimes of the Nazis to a pseudoscientific American movement of the early 20th century called eugenics. Based on selective breeding of human beings, eugenics began in laboratories on Long Island but ended in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. Cruel and racist laws were enacted in 27 U.S. states, and the supporters of eugenics included progressive thinkers like Woodrow Wilson, Margaret Sanger, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Ultimately, over 60,000 "unfit" Americans were coercively sterilized, a third of them after Nuremberg declared such practices crimes against humanity. This is a timely and shocking chronicle of bad science at its worst — with many important lessons for the impending genetic age.

To watch the video of this audio presentation visit: http://www.heritage.org/events/2011/11/silenced

For The Heritage Foundation’s Archives of great shows visit: http://www.heritage.org/events/pastevents

The 1989 fatwa against Salman Rushdie awakened many  westerners to the danger of being charged with blasphemy in the Muslim world. Charges of "blasphemy," "apostasy," and "insulting Islam" are increasingly used by authoritarian governments and extremist forces within key Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states to acquire and consolidate power. These codes have proved effective in intimidating not only converts and heterodox groups, but also political and religious reformers.

In their newly released book, Silenced (Oxford University Press, 2011), Paul Marshall and Nina Shea provide the first survey of such accusations in the contemporary Muslim world, in international organizations, and in the West. These charges traditionally carry a punishment of death but are contested within Islam today, as described by the late Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid in the foreword to Silenced. Nevertheless, as Marshall and Shea describe, hundreds of victims, including political dissidents, religious reformers, journalists, writers, artists, movie makers, and religious minorities in many countries. They also document the political effects in Muslim societies of blasphemy and apostasy laws, as well as non-governmental fatwas and vigilante violence. And they examine in the West the move toward importing new blasphemy standards through bans on purported hate speech and Islamophobia, aggressively promoted by the OIC, and the increasing threat of violence to stifle commentary on Islam even in the absence of law.

Detailed Description- "The Making of America is about the world's greatest political success formula. In a little over a century, this formula allowed a small segment of the human family -- less than 6 percent -- to become the richest nation on earth. It allowed them to originate more than half of the world's total production and enjoy the highest standard of living in the history of the world."

"But Americans have more to share than their wealth. They have the world's greatest political success formula to share. In this respect they have been at fault. They have been too self-conscious about their system and its accomplishments. At times they have been almost apologetic that they have had such a remarkable system when the rest of the world did not. The world needs to know this formula." - From the introduction to the Making of America

In this seminar you will learn the Founding Fathers' story. Much of it is told in the words of the Founders themselves. You will feel the power of their minds sweeping away centuries of bad government and bad laws to formulate a whole new society based on human freedom.

Show 956 No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden

byMark Owen, Kevin Maurer

Overview of book- For the first time anywhere, the first-person account of the planning and execution of the Bin Laden raid from a Navy Seal who confronted the terrorist mastermind and witnessed his final moment

From the streets of Iraq to the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips in the Indian Ocean, and from the mountaintops of Afghanistan to the third floor of Osama Bin Laden’s compound, operator Mark Owen of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group — commonly known as SEAL Team Six — has been a part of some of the most memorable special operations in history, as well as countless missions that never made headlines.

No Easy Day puts readers alongside Owen and the other handpicked members of the twenty-four-man team as they train for the biggest mission of their lives. The blow-by-blow narrative of the assault, beginning with the helicopter crash that could have ended Owen’s life straight through to the radio call confirming Bin Laden’s death, is an essential piece of modern history.

In No Easy Day, Owen also takes readers onto the field of battle in America’s ongoing War on Terror and details the selection and training process for one of the most elite units in the military. Owen’s story draws on his youth in Alaska and describes the SEALs’ quest to challenge themselves at the highest levels of physical and mental endurance. With boots-on-the-ground detail, Owen describes numerous previously unreported missions that illustrate the life and work of a SEAL and the evolution of the team after the events of September 11. In telling the true story of the SEALs whose talents, skills, experiences, and exceptional sacrifices led to one of the greatest victories in the War on Terror, Mark Owen honors the men who risk everything for our country, and he leaves readers with a deep understanding of the warriors who keep America safe.

Show 955  Invisible Armies  An Epic History of Guerrilla Warfare from Ancient Times to the Present

Author: Max Boot, Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Senior Fellow for National Security Studies

 Overview of book-

As fitting for the twenty-first century as von Clausewitz's On War was in its own time, Invisible Armies is a complete global history of guerrilla uprisings through the ages.

Beginning with the first insurgencies in the ancient world--when Alexander the Great discovered that fleet nomads were harder to defeat than massive conventional armies--Max Boot, best-selling author and military advisor in Iraq and Afghanistan, masterfully guides us from the Jewish rebellion against the Roman Empire up through the horrors of the French-Indochina War and the shadowy, post-9/11 battlefields of today. Relying on a diverse cast of unforgettable characters--not only Mao and Che but also the legendary Italian nationalist Giuseppe Garibaldi, the archaeologist-turned–military commander T. E. Lawrence, and the "Quiet American" Edward Lansdale, among others--Boot explodes everything we thought we knew about unconventional combat. The result is both an enthralling read and our most important work on nontraditional warfare.

Show 953 Book- Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China

Ezra Vogel on Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China

Ezra Vogel has published hugely influential books on both China and Japan. In his latest, he examines the key role played by Deng Xiaoping in moving China away from a thoroughly planned economy, a transition that required becoming much more open and engaged with the rest of the world. In his Nov. 9, 2011 presentation at the USC U.S.-China Institute, Vogel focused on how Deng's foreign policies were very much driven by his assessment of the desperate need China had for better trained personnel, foreign capital, and foreign technology.

Distinguished Harvard sociologist Ezra Vogel offers his assessment of Deng's leadership. J. Stapleton Roy, former ambassador to China, wrote of Vogel's book,

"Deng Xiaoping's skill, vision, and courage in overcoming seemingly insuperable obstacles and guiding China onto the path of sustained economic development rank him with the great leaders of history. And yet, too little is known about the life and career of this extraordinary man. In this superbly researched and highly readable biography, Vogel has definitively filled this void. This fascinating book provides a host of insights into the factors that enabled Deng to triumph over repeated setbacks and lay the basis for China to regain the wealth and power that has eluded it for two centuries."

Ezra Vogel is professor emeritus of sociology at Harvard University where he taught 1964-2000. He is one of the most influential scholars of East Asia, contributing vital books on China and Japan. His China-focused titles include Canton Under Communism (1969) and One Step Ahead in China: Guangdong Under Reform (1989). His books on Japan include Japan's New Middle Class (1963), Japan as Number One: Lessons for America (1979), and Is Japan Still Number One? (2000). In addition to these seminal works, Vogel has edited a number of others, including Living with China : U.S./China Relations in the Twenty-First Century (1997). Professor Vogel is a member of the USC US-China Institute Board of Scholars.

The event was co-sponsored by The Pacific Council on International Policy.

Synopsis of book-   Perhaps no one in the twentieth century had a greater long-term impact on world history than Deng Xiaoping. And no scholar of contemporary East Asian history and culture is better qualified than Ezra Vogel to disentangle the many contradictions embodied in the life and legacy of China’s boldest strategist.

Once described by Mao Zedong as a “needle inside a ball of cotton,” Deng was the pragmatic yet disciplined driving force behind China’s radical transformation in the late twentieth century. He confronted the damage wrought by the Cultural Revolution, dissolved Mao’s cult of personality, and loosened the economic and social policies that had stunted China’s growth. Obsessed with modernization and technology, Deng opened trade relations with the West, which lifted hundreds of millions of his countrymen out of poverty. Yet at the same time he answered to his authoritarian roots, most notably when he ordered the crackdown in June 1989 at Tiananmen Square.

Deng’s youthful commitment to the Communist Party was cemented in Paris in the early 1920s, among a group of Chinese student-workers that also included Zhou Enlai. Deng returned home in 1927 to join the Chinese Revolution on the ground floor. In the fifty years of his tumultuous rise to power, he endured accusations, purges, and even exile before becoming China’s preeminent leader from 1978 to 1989 and again in 1992. When he reached the top, Deng saw an opportunity to creatively destroy much of the economic system he had helped build for five decades as a loyal follower of Mao—and he did not hesitate.

Show 950 Documentary- Blood Money The Business of Abortion

To watch the video of this documentary visit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0stPy6-Oug0

Published on Oct 23, 2012

This 2010 documentary DVD deals with the issue and practice of abortion in the United States. The program is presented and narrated by Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The filmmakers and participants of this documentary allege that the practice of abortion is not truly about women's rights, women's health nor matters of choice and liberty as the subject too often is billed as being based on. The film's premise is obviously slanted to being against the practice of abortion.

This film is an indictment of the practice of abortion as being one which is solely based on large profit seeking. Furthermore, the presentation shows abortion as an act of medical violence against women and a strong component of racism and ethnic bias taints the practice in America currently.

The film has legal experts, social critics, religious leaders and commentators, former abortion clinic medical staff, civil rights leaders, historians and individual men and women examine the practice of abortion.
